Reports of Pokemon Go players’ accounts being hacked and hacked have raised concerns in the community.
Several cases have surfaced on Reddit and X/Twitter of fans describing the loss of their accounts. In particular, the popular TheSilphRoad subreddit was flooded with threads from affected users.
They hinted at trying to contact Niantic to regain access to their account and described the “emotional pain” they felt after losing the player.
“I am very sad and upset. Eight years later, the author continued, “I tried to contact [Niantic] customer service and all they said was, ‘Sorry, we can’t help you.’
“Four days ago I got a message saying ‘no account’. Tried to contact Niantic customer support but only bots answered,” said another affected user.
“It must be hacked at this point,” said another thread. “I’m very disappointed and I don’t think I’ll be opening a new account again,” they said, explaining that they were unable to resolve the situation through official support channels.
“It’s scary.” I think this is the tenth post I’ve seen in the last week. “I wonder if there’s been a security breach,” one victim replied.
Others had similar concerns. “This seems to be happening to a lot of people these past few days. Wondering if a security breach has occurred?
It is unclear whether the frequency of the messages is random or sinister. The opinion in the community is that the main reason for this is the Pokemon Trainers Club associated with Pokemon Go.
Pokemon Go’s next major update, Max Out, will go live on September 3 and will introduce Dynamaxing and previously unavailable “deer” in the Kalar region.
