Activision has promised to explain more about how Modern Warfare 3’s skill-based gameplay will work in June. However, June left without writing a blog, which angered the player base.
After years of silence on the subject, Activision finally took a look behind the scenes at players in April 2024, detailing how matchmaking works in an 18-page report. In the blog we briefly explained that skills are part of the matchmaking process and noted that more information is available. It will be published in June.
However, Modern Warfare 3 players took to Reddit to express their frustration after the developer failed to deliver the promised blog.
In response to the white paper’s non-release, one player joked, “Someone needs to tell Activision that white paper doesn’t literally just mean blank paper.”
Since the release of XDefiant, anger against skill-based matchmaking has grown. Despite advertising to the contrary, the arena shooter is a direct competitor to Call of Duty and the new FPS title eschews skill racing.
Activision argued that skill-based matchmaking had value because if players continued to fail, they would likely abandon the game or stop playing altogether. At least for now, XDefiant has proven it can maintain a strong player base without skill-based matchmaking.
This led to another user arguing that Activision was overthinking it because “the fact that there is even a white paper on matchmaking shows how complicated matchmaking is.” Make sure people have fun, by creating good contacts and random lobbies. ”
Even if Activision doesn’t abolish or remove skill-based matchmaking, players will at least want more answers about how the system works. “Why can’t all of this information be released at the same time?” asked a third commenter. You’re not hiding anything, are you? “
