Google is rolling out a feature update for certain Android phones, introducing new anti-theft functionalities like Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock. While Remote Lock isn’t new and many Android users are familiar with it, the other two features were announced in May and aim to enhance data security.
Anti-Theft Features
- Theft Detection Lock: This is the most advanced feature. It uses AI and the phone’s sensors to recognize typical motions associated with theft. For example, if someone snatches your phone and starts running, or if the phone detects movement similar to being stolen from a bike or car, it will automatically lock the device, restricting access to apps and data.
- Offline Device Lock: This feature locks the device if the thief attempts to keep it disconnected for an extended period.
- Remote Lock: This allows you to lock your phone remotely using your phone number, even if Find My Device is disabled or if you can’t log into your Google account.
It remains unclear which specific phones will receive these new features, so it’s a good idea to check if you have the latest version of Google Play Services.
