Activision shut down the project before the H2M mod for Modern Warfare 2 (2009) was released on August 16, and fans called on Activision to get out of the situation due to some undisclosed rewards.
Based on Modern Warfare Remastered, H2M features over 50 multiplayer maps from multiple Call of Duty games, a huge selection of weapons, an original progression system and all the classic killstreaks. Many content creators got early access, and the footage of the first gameplay got players excited.
Modern Warfare Remastered was accidentally removed from Steam just days before H2M was released and the mod became the third best selling game on Steam.
Given the sudden increase in sales after players took advantage of the deal, fears began to spread that the activation program would be shut down.
Activision sent a cease and desist letter to the H2M development team the day before the release, forcing them to immediately and permanently cease all activities.
“You have to buy the game from Activision so they can pocket everything,” Gale emphasized. “Maintaining the old codes on the new servers and bringing back the nostalgia is legitimate. Very disappointed, but not surprised.”
“To realize the ugliness of this move, Activision waited a day before releasing the mod and a day after Modern Warfare Remastered was released on Steam (which requires the mod).”
The closure of H2M follows the trend of other fan mods.
In May 2023, Activision shocked the CoD community by sending a notice of termination to Sm2 developers after more than a year of developing the free mod using the MW2019 engine.
